MAS - Milano

A stone’s throw from the Castello Sforzesco, inside the nineteenth-century Palazzo Bonacossa, the Museum of Art and Science was born as the only one “ Educational museum for the detection of false antiques ” in the world.

The Museum

In 1990, the founder Gottfried Matthaes left the industry to focus on a felt theme of primary importance: the ascertainment of the False in Art. In the same year he bought two floors of Palazzo Bonacossa, to give life to the MAS-Museum of Art and Science in Milan . The museum also houses the scientific laboratory “Authentic Art” specialized in spectroscopic dating .

The Museum houses the prestigious collections of Buddhist Art and African Art and an interactive path on authenticity in art and antiques. Each room deals with a fundamental theme: from painting on canvas and wood to excavated ceramics , from antiques to amber and ivory , from silver to prints and ancient books , from tapestries to carpets , explaining for each topic what are the characteristics that help to recognize the authentic object from the fake one. There are also numerous “test stations” , stations with microscopes, magnifying glasses, special lamps available for visitors to carry out practical tests. The didactics of the museum also includes a special path dedicated to children. The exhibition concludes with two rooms dedicated to Leonardo Da Vinci .

MAS Museum

A story that begins in 1914 , when the family of the founder of the Museum of Art and Science, Gottfried Matthaes , originally from Dresden (a city of art which around 1900 became a center of modern European painting) founded a renowned school of painting based first in Dresden and since 1927 in Berlin. In this city, in 1930, they were entrusted, among other activities, with the task of decorating some rooms of the famous “Pergamon Museum”.
